Does Society Welcome Trump Supporters

By Ruth Phillips

During the 2016 presidential campaign, many people who had always displayed a bumper sticker supporting their candidate were hesitant to do so. Trump's candidacy infuriated people so much that they forgot that this country has a tradition of free speech. In urban areas, many who supported the winning candidate posted no signs on their cars or in their yards. Some who did suffered vandalism and personal attacks. Many progressive or liberal people still refuse to welcome Trump supporters.

There have been news reports - not in the mainstream media but online and on conservative talk shows - of people wearing 'MAGA' hats being denied service, verbally confronted by sales clerks or fast-food cashiers, or even physically attacked. More support is shown for our sitting president online than in any other way. People call the White House comment line to let the President know of their support.

Although conservatives outnumber liberals in America, they often feel sidelined without support in the mainstream media or from celebrities in Hollywood. Unfortunately conservatives tend to be quieter than progressives. They stay home, take care of their families, practice traditional values, and seek a quiet life. It's hard to get them aroused for any cause.

There is no doubt that a vocal minority can swing public perceptions. One example of this is the Black Lives Matter movement, which is based on false narratives. Although the Trump administration has done much for blacks - lowest unemployment among blacks on record, black men and women in high positions, genuine aid to poor countries like Haiti - it is constantly accused of racism. Most Americans support traditional marriage, but the same sex marriage movement has tremendous momentum.

The polls are often slanted. It's not hard to write questions in a way that gets an answer acceptable to the pollsters. It's also routine to take polls in major cities, where the populations tend to be more liberal, rather than in small towns or rural areas. Polling on college campuses is popular, even though the views of young adults who have not done much independent living don't necessarily reflect national opinions.

This feeling of being unable to engage in civil discourse is new to the American scene. However, since it doesn't seem to be going away, people who feel that the President is doing a good job need to speak up. It's not true that what is going on won't impact the average citizen See what has happened to education in this country, or to the ability to hold a job or operate a business without 'thought police' harassment.

Many citizens are aware that a biased media is a threat to freedom. Fake news, sensational coverage of scandals (true or imagined) which replaces more important topics, and hostile debate moderators or political commentators leave people uninformed, misinformed, and confused. The President has proved remarkably able to operate without mainstream press support and still get some of his campaign promises fulfilled.

Fortunately, too, conservatives have woken up to the need - and the duty - to vote. Even with chicanery at the polls and illegal voting going unpunished, the Trump-Pence ticket won. It is vital that those who support our president and love our country vote in every election and carefully consider candidates for every local and national post.
