How To Start A California Apparel Photography Company

By Diane Fisher

Creating effective and appealing clothes images requires some expertise. Normally, people see models on billboards advertising a particular clothing line, but they have no idea how the shooting takes place. If you are interested in the fashion industry and you want to start your own California apparel photography business, there are several steps that you should follow. This business is doing well in big cities and even smaller towns. Therefore, all you need is capital and the will to run the business. If you have no photo shooting skills, it is wise to attend some training.

To start with, you must secure a business permit from your local government. There are some requirements that you must meet for you to be given the permit. These requirements tend to be different in each state. Hence, make sure you know what your state requires and obtain a permit to open the business. More so, make sure that you have insured the business.

After you have met all the necessary statutory requirements, it is time to set up your business. You cannot shoot without a model. Therefore, you need to look for a model. To make your shots more appealing, it is advisable to use live models. Decide whether you want to pick a male or female, or both. Also, when selecting the model, you must check how the clothes look on him or her and whether the models will work for you for the long term.

Next, start setting up the place of shooting. The space or area you select will significantly depend on the type of shooting you want to do. More so, make sure the space is enough so that the models can follow your cues and freely move around. Make sure you have designated some backdrop boundaries as well.

After that, start thinking about lighting. For every shooting, lighting is essential. Too much light will make the images to fade while too dark light will make the photos to look dull. For this reason, you must find a way to have lighting that is just like the window light. Usually, most photographers use soft boxes, speed lights, and umbrellas. Nonetheless, speed lights have been found to be too bright and sharp.

Once everything is in place and you have achieved the right lighting, make sure the model is in position. Make them stand the way you want. Illustrate the standard positions and explain to them how you want your vision to be. Place an X on the surface directly in front of the camera and tell the models to stand there.

When you start shooting, it is wise to use wide framing. This leaves enough space at the edges. Therefore, you can start cropping and editing the images later after the shooting. Also, make sure that the models understand your cues and pose the way you want.

After the shooting, start your post-production project. This takes quite some time thus ensure that you allocate some time to this project. You can either edit the images on your own or outsource labor to make work easier for you. Make sure you hire a professional to do the editing if you are outsourcing.
