What Does The Maryland Libertarian Party Believe In?

By Carolyn Wagner

There is so much political division in the United States today that many citizens aren't behaving rationally. The level of discourse is poor, and the negativity is rampant. At such a pivotal point, the majority of Americans may agree on only one thing. Congress is dysfunctional. They blame both Republicans and Democrats. The Maryland Libertarian Party, is one group that hopes the division will convince independents to take a serious look at its platform.

Most Americans are unsure exactly who Libertarians are and what they stand for. Many who think they do know something about the beliefs and values of Libertarians are wrong. The cornerstone of this group is individual freedom. Libertarians believe in limited government. They want politicians to stay out of all aspects of their lives.

This group is not interested in Republicans who believe they can legislate morality. They aren't interested in Democrats who believe in subsidizing the underprivileged with their money. Libertarians advocate for legalization of drugs and free trade. They are not in favor of campaign finance reform.

The group is liberal on social issues. They are believers in personal choice. They don't want the federal government to intervene in the decisions they make when it comes to marriage or the formalization of personal relationships. Libertarians consider drug possession and drug use to be victimless crimes that don't need to be prosecuted. They believe the death penalty is problematic and needs to be stopped for the foreseeable future.

Libertarians are economic conservatives. They don't believe in regulation and think businesses should be left alone to compete freely with one another. If this group had its way, it would eliminate Social Security, income taxes, and the Internal Revenue Service. They are convinced that, in a free market society, individuals will contribute to charitable organizations that will see to the needs of America's under served. This will eliminate any government bailouts.

The abortion issue is more complicated for this group. A number of years ago they came out with the opinion that the federal government didn't have a right to make decisions for individuals in the matter. Lately they have moved more to the center. They have a proposed plank stating that expenses for an individual's personal decisions should not be the responsibility of the taxpayers. Libertarians would eliminate restrictions on access to over-the-counter medications related to birth control.

When it comes to foreign affairs the party is isolationist. The group believes the United States military should exist only as a national defense mechanism. Libertarians do not believe the armed forces should be deployed outside the United States for any reason. Their reasoning is that this country should not be in the business of policing other nations.

They would not give any aid to foreign countries. Libertarians would abolish security clearances on information they believe all Americans have the right to possess. The Libertarian Party is one that is socially liberal, economically conservative, and non-interventionist in its views.
